Activists from State to spread Gandhi’s ideals in Australia
Staff reporter GUWAHATI, Sep 2 –
Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals have always created a feeling of awe in the mind of the international community. The popularity of Gandhism is an accepted fact, and now the philosophy of the Father of the Nation is about to get firmly entrenched in the land of the Kangaroos, thanks to an Australian Garvin Brown, an ardent believer of the Gandhian philosophy. Three social activists from the State are going to be a part of the efforts of this confirmed Gandhian to spread the message of peace and create awareness about Gandhi in Australia this month.Mahatma Gandhi Awareness, an organisation promoting global peace and nonviolence, based in Queensland, Australia is organising a five days long Peace Walk which will be led by Brown. The social activists from Assam, Jayanta Barman an engineer and a social activist from Guwahati, Biju Borbaruah, Managing Trustee of Asha Darshan, Tamulpur, and Uttam Teron, founder of Parijat Academy, a school for underprivileged children situated at Pamohi, Guwahati will take part in the Peace Walk which will start on September 17. It needs to be mentioned here that Brown is no stranger to Assam. Some time back he visited the State and participated in a Charity Walk organised in the capital city by Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS). Born in New Zealand in 1928, Brown was inspired by Gandhiji’s work for the poor and the underprivileged at a very young age. Later he decided to dedicate his life in propagating the Gandhian thoughts.Uttam Teron informed The Assam Tribune that the walk will begin from Caboolture and end at Brisbane, Australia. The distance of 73 km will be covered in 5 days. In between, the participants will interact with school and college students and media people.Their “walking song” will be Raghupati Raghava. The three persons from Assam taking part in the walk are the only representatives from India. Many notable personalities from all across the globe are likely to take part in the walk. The team from Assam will leave for Australia on September 12.
